With superheroes on the decline and Kung-Fu on the rise, Marvel decided to follow other popular trends as well. What else besides learning how to roundhouse kick your enemies were kids interested in?
Kids couldn't karate chop comic shop owners fast enough to make them get more monster mags. Marvel kept fans interested with books like Tomb of Dracula, Werewolf by Night, and the Son of Satan.
Trying to cash in even more, Marvel also started reprinting old horror books from the Golden Age of comics.
These books didn't sell that well until Marvel injected new life into a title called SUPERNATURAL THRILLERS.
The first four issues were reprints, but issue #5 featured an all new story by STEVE GERBER with art by VAL MAYERIK.
Who was this new character? None other than THE LIVING MUMMY!
The mummy appeared in 10 issues or Supernatural Thrillers. He did not show up in #6. However, fan outcry brought him back to life. He was in all the following issues, until the comic's all too soon demise came about at issue #15.
Anyone can look at the covers at various websites, but featured here are two nice splash pages I scanned from my collection. Enjoy!
The story was about an slave named N'Kantu. In trying to save his people, he overthrows an egyptian pharaoh. Thinking he achieved a victory, he is thwarted by a mystic who throws a "magic" elixir on him causing paralysis.
Locked in a tomb for 3,000 years he lies awake enduring insanity the entire time.
He awakens in modern day Egypt. He romps through Egypt and gets sent to a museum in NYC, but the highlight is when he is summoned to outer space by four greedy elementals.
The following scans are more Marvel Value Stamps that were contained in the 10 issue run of SUPERNATURAL THRILLERS featuring THE LIVING MUMMY!
